Alexx Mubanga is a Zambina born, Australian dancer who works with communities across continents to create unity and power through his own afro-style dance practice. Featured on ‘The Project’ and Seven news, this logo was created for use on video, photography and merchandise for his upcoming tour.

I drew upon the strong sense of community that Alexx focuses on in all of his videos, particularly wanting to communicate that all dancers are different, but the medium brings them together. There was also a very deliberate use of different tones for the skin and clothing, while still keeping unity through the monotone nature of the logo. 

 

Verve Portraits | Campaign Creative Direction

Verve Portraits needed to increase sales during Father's Day - one of the biggest times of the year for the Australian photography company. Utilising marketing research, it became clear that targeting both females and males would be beneficial, and utilising more gender-neutral marketing was an opportunity to test this theory.

 Inspired by difficulties for active-lifestyle family members to be creative with Father's Day presents, we targeted a range of high-earners within CBD area and their consumer behaviour. Typically, Father's Day gifts are repetitive and often generic. Using this research, tag-lines were formed to reflect his pattern of thinking and demonstrate that the company understands, and Verve could be a creative, event-based alternative. 

 'Not just another pair of socks' … 'Not just another bottle of cologne' … 'Not just another set of clubs'

 Marketing material included Video testimonials from Fathers across Social media platforms, point-of-sale advertising, product promotions with special edition packaging, online digital products and paid advertising across Facebook and Instagram. Engagement with the public from in-store large-format posters increased dramatically, with messaging created also increasing brand retention. Sales for the special edition products rose 300% from the previous year's promotion.

Bowies Days Vintage is a new Melbourne based retro clothing label for women.

The client asked for something to represent the feel of her style and clothing range. We found amazing inspiration from 60′s television and even New York signage and created many mockups to finally arrive at something I can say communicates a feminine, retro feel.

National Breast Cancer Foundation & Verve Portraits | Awareness Campaign

Every year, thousands of women in Australia lose their battle with breast cancer. To celebrate breast cancer awareness month, Verve Portraits, Australia's largest photography service teamed up with The National Breast Cancer Foundation to raise money and awareness for the cause. 

Working with the Community Engagement Manager at Verve Portraits, as well as the State Manager for NBCF, an array of marketing collateral was created to be scheduled throughout the month. 

Firstly, aligning the key brand values of connection helped inspire Jane Scoble's Story of Survival video. We organised a special session for Jane at the studios. Encouraging Verve to push past purely promotional videos online hopefully builds stronger brand associations and value for followers.

In addition to the video, interactive Instagram carousel promotions, photographic content and internal company events meant raising more funding and awareness from staff, clients and new audiences.

These poster designs originated from a graduate brief calling for three Adshel posters that could communicate a strong design sense while creating copy that would creatively tie in the theme to each of the conferences.

I used digital illustration to explore a new take on old classical painting. I used the copy to tie the references back into the conference themes in a humorous and ironic way. My aim was to create posters that would appeal to the design community, while still gaining attention from the general public.

Eventually the poster designs would be used by CATC for teaching purposes as well as for television and film productions for set dressing.

 

SOLANA PSYCHOLOGY | Logo Design

Melbourne based psychology practice, Solana Psychology was after a logo design that not only communicated a sense of calm and clarity that the practice was looking to move towards, but also a design that incorporated their inspiration - the gingko leaf. Having worked with the owner, Shanti Monteiro, through many design concepts, we realised that using nature and hand-drawn illustration techniques created the right representation of how we wanted clients to experience their style of therapy.

Using illustration and watercolour techniques, I aimed to design a balanced and earthy logo matched with a light and simple typography. The logo was then used on branded stationary, interior artwork and a large exterior vinyl sign for the practice.

This work started from a graduate design brief competition calling for a marketing strategy that would increase awareness of the symptoms of Tourette Syndrome for primary and secondary level students in Australia. 

The most important element of understanding amongst those with diverse backgrounds is to realize that we are all the same, and for those diagnosed with Tourette syndrome, this is the same philosophy. Often the media and film wrongly depict the symptoms of what it’s like to have Tourette’s, so creating an education pack that is backed by a national promotional competition and promoted by participating artists will encourage students to learn and adapt the information in a creative and novel way.

Student and complementary teacher’s education packs, as well as an outline of the marketing channels and integrated marketing communications plan, was provided. Logo, branding and pattern design helped establish brand awareness to increase the popularity and engagement of the plan.

This design, inner layout and alternative covers were created as part of my graduate work for my Diploma in Graphic Design. I later incorporated the same design into interactive publications for TV props. The design was the winner at CATC for that 2016.

Logo Design for travelling purveyors of fine coffee for the Mornington Peninsula. The brief asked for a hand-lettered design that could appeal to the seaside area that the coffee caravan would travel around, while still retaining a point of difference from it’s competition.

The Carlton Club in Melbourne is three storey bar made famous for it's vibrant interior design and copious taxidermy animals everywhere you look. Hot pink walls and details challenge the sense, as does the venue's love for showcasing arts and music that push the boundaries. These posters are a few made for the bar - of whom always wanted to incorporate the vibrancy of the bar. 'Through the Rabbit Hole' used sponsor 'White Rabbit' colour palettes as well as Alice in Wonderland references. The Queens Birthday posters called for hot pink, party vibes while 'Off the Wall' Trivia night required safari references.

 

NEIGHBOURS TV SERIES | Logo & Design Rebrand

With an oncoming complete set redesign on TV series 'Neighbours', I was approached to manage the rebrand of the logo for new signage and stationary. The old logo was dated, with a typical font, incorrect spacing and harsh red logo. Working with the production designer, I created a transparent lotus motif that was eventually used to create a layered acrylic sign, back lit to still retain some of the sheen of the original logo, but more subtle and luxurious.

After the success of the Lassiters set rebrand, Fremantlemedia approached me to redesign the old 'Harold's Store' logo to be incorporated into the set as props, stationary and back-lit signage. The logo needed to show coffee, but not to look to detailed for the sake of the signage built for set. Using a rounded style instead of the original hard, serif capitals on the original logo meant more versatility creative licence for future application on the show.

As well as set dressing and props design, I created scripted signage and illustrations for the ABC TV Comedy series. Trump kissing himself was an idea put forward by the writers and I had the pleasure of creating it in real life! For signage, I used inspiration from typical sign writing work you would typically see on traditional stores and went from there.

In 2015 I worked solo on creating daily chalkboard typography and illustration work across six locations in Melbourne during the Melbourne Comedy Festival. It was a gigantic challenge, working freehand most of the time for sake of speed - but it was well worth the effort to have pushed my skills with chalk to the limit!
